Switzerland: Consultation on import ban for furs and declaration obligation for foie gras

11-04-2024

In a press release dated 10 April 2024, the Federal Council opened the consultation on the corresponding amendments to the ordinance. It wants to ban the import of furs and fur products produced in a manner that causes cruelty to animals. However, the import of furs and fur products that have not been produced using methods that are cruel to animals will remain possible under the new regulation and will be explicitly regulated in the proposal. In addition, the labelling of certain imported products is to be improved, with various declaration obligations envisaged, including that products from the "stuffing fattening" of geese and ducks are produced in a manner which is prohibited according to Swiss law. The consultation period lasts until 12 July 2024.
