International: South Korea passes law banning dog meat trade

09-01-2024

Today, the South Korean parliament passed a law banning the slaughter of dogs for human consumption, as well as the sale and distribution of dog meat. Under the law, the breeding and slaughtering of dogs to produce meat for human consumption will be punishable by a maximum three-year prison sentence or a fine of up to 30 million won. However, the legislation will not come into force until 2027 and it appears that the contents of the law known so far do not explicitly prohibit the consumption of dog meat per se.
