Switzerland: Federal Council Launches Consultation on Agricultural Policy from 2030
On 2 September 2026, the Swiss Federal Council opened the consultation on Agricultural Policy from 2030 (AP30+). The reform aims to strengthen Switzerland’s food security by giving agricultural businesses greater entrepreneurial flexibility and enabling them to make better use of their value creation potential.
Key measures include a stronger focus of direct payments on concrete outcomes rather than detailed requirements, including in the areas of ecology and animal welfare, as well as a reduction in administrative burdens through digitalisation. In addition, the market position of agricultural businesses is to be strengthened, while crop protection and resource efficiency are to be improved. Further measures include enhanced support for beneficial organisms and insects, the promotion of sustainable technologies, and stronger education and advisory services to help agricultural businesses adapt to climate change.
The Federal Council also intends to strengthen responsibility for a sustainable agricultural and food system across the entire value chain, including food processors, retailers and consumers.
The consultation will remain open until 8 December 2026.
