International: One Health Joint Plan of Action extended by the Quadripartite until 2029

The Quadripartite collaboration on One Health – comprising FAO, UNEP, WHO and WOAH – has decided to extend the implementation period of the One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH JPA) beyond its original 2022–2026 period to 2029. This provides countries with a reliable global framework beyond 2026 for planning, implementing and further developing their national One Health priorities. The extended Action Plan will continue to serve as a guide for governments and other stakeholders in their activities at national, regional and global levels. Cross-sectoral cooperation on the prevention, detection and management of health risks at the interface between humans, animals, plants and ecosystems will also continue. 

The extension is in line with the renewed Quadripartite Memorandum of Understanding for the period 2025–2030 and, together with it, is intended to ensure the continuity of the collaboration’s governance and implementation structures. Both instruments thus form the framework for further collaboration, particularly in coordinating technical support to countries, conducting joint advocacy, mobilising resources and implementing One Health at various levels. 

A structured review of the OH JPA is also planned during the extended implementation period. The focus will be on the current state of implementation, as well as lessons learnt and established approaches from various countries and regions. Furthermore, the review is intended to take account of current developments and changing requirements in the One Health field and to highlight how the Action Plan can be further developed. The findings from the extension phase are intended to provide a basis for the future direction of the OH JPA. Further implementation at country level is also intended to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals under the 2030 Agenda.
