International: BOAS: Pekingese and Japanese Chin also severely affected
A recent study published in the journal PLOS One shows that, in addition to pugs, French bulldogs and bulldogs, Pekingese and Japanese Chins are also severely affected by brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). Symptoms of the disease include significant breathing problems, rapid overheating, limited exercise capacity and sleep disturbances. According to the research team at the University of Cambridge, almost 90 per cent of the Pekingese and over 80 per cent of the Japanese Chins examined are affected. The disease is therefore as common as it is in pugs and French bulldogs. King Charles Spaniels, Shih Tzus, Brussels Griffons, Boston Terriers and Bordeauxdogges are considered to be at moderate risk. The analysis included 900 adult dogs, whose breathing was assessed before and after a three-minute exercise test. With their work, the researchers want to raise awareness of the consequences of cruel breeding practices and encourage breeders and buyers to take more responsibility.
