Switzerland: FSVO issues emergency ordinance following detection of HPAI avian influenza virus in the canton of Bern

06-11-2025

On 4 November 2025, the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus was detected in a wild greylag goose found dead in Vinelz, canton of Bern.

In response, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office (FSVO) has today introduced new measures to prevent the further spread of avian influenza and to safeguard domestic poultry. These measures include, in particular, the establishment of observation zones. Their aim is to prevent any contact between wild birds and domestic poultry, notably through enhanced biosecurity, hygiene requirements and protected outdoor enclosures.

The corresponding FSVO ordinance enters into force today, 6 November 2025, and will remain in effect until 31 March 2026.
