International: Emerging Economies to drive growth in animal-source food consumption

18-07-2025

The newly released OECD–FAO Agricultural Outlook 2025–2034 projects a significant rise in global consumption and production of animal-source foods over the next decade, driven primarily by emerging economies. Per-capita calorie intake from animal-based foods is expected to increase by 6 % globally, and by 24 % in lower-middle-income countries, reflecting changing diets and rising incomes. The production of meat, dairy products and eggs is also expected to grow by 17 %, contributing to a 6 % rise in agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. The report stresses that targeted investment in sustainable practices, such as precision agriculture and improved animal feeding, could raise productivity, reduce emissions, and help combat undernourishment. However, smallholder farmers face growing challenges due to falling real prices and limited access to markets and technology. The report calls for policy support and international cooperation to ensure inclusive and sustainable growth.
