3) Switzerland: FSVO publishes fourth report on antibiotic consumption in veterinary medicine
On 10 October 2024, the Federal Food Safety and Veterinary Office published the report on antibiotic consumption in veterinary medicine of the year 2023. The report analyses the use of antibiotics in pets and livestock separately.
According to the report, the use of antibiotics in livestock has decreased as desired. However, it should be noted that it is still common practice to order antibiotics in advance, which makes it difficult to distinguish between the drugs sold and those actually used, and could distort the statistics. In addition, the report's conclusion makes it clear that a further reduction in the use of antibiotics (due to negative consequences such as the development of resistance) is still necessary and that work must be done in this area, in line with animal health and welfare. The ongoing problem of the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry, which is still too high, also shows the challenges that intensive animal husbandry in particular poses for public health.
