International: California Governor signs Octopus Farming Ban and Farmed Octopus Saling Ban into Law
On Sept. 27 2024 California has enacted a bill that bans octopus farming both on land and in water, while also prohibiting the sale of farmed octopus products within the state.
This makes California the second state in the United States (first was Washington State) to pass a ban on octopus farming and even the first state to pass a ban on farmed octopus saling. The reasons given for the ban were ethical and environment protection-related. These highly intelligent animals - who would have significant cognitive abilities, can learn new skills, even use tools – would have needs that cannot be met in farming environments. The bill reflects a growing awareness of animal welfare and environmental protection issues.
