International: Legislation to end live sheep exports introduced in Australia
30-05-2024
Today, the Australian Government has introduced legislation to Parliament to formally establish the end date for the export of live sheep by sea from Australia. The legislation follows through on an election promise made by the government in 2019 and reiterated in 2022. The process involved months of extensive consultation including receiving thousands of submissions, commissioning and receiving a report by an independent panel, and announcing an AUD 107 million transition support package. The envisioned end date for live sheep export by sea is 1 May 2028.
